Getting Started (Trial)

Ready to start playing the Ex illis Trial? You are about to step into the role of a lord tasked with leading hardened soldiers and powerful creatures onto the battlefield. Armed with your intelligence and your intuition, you will make history by giving orders to your troops in combat, training your men back at camp, leading great heroes and mustering legendary armies.
This page is meant to be the starting point in your journey. You will find a host of information and resources to get you up and running in no time.
Activate the Trial
If you haven’t done so already, start by creating an account on the ex-illis.com website. Then login into your account and, under the Home tab, activate the trial.
Muster your armies
The Ex illis Trial comes with two full armies to give you a good overview of the gameplay possibilities you’ll find in the game. The miniatures you’ll need to gather are:

Chances are you might not have all the miniatures to proxy these heroes and units appropriately. Feel free to use Paper Proxies for anything you’re missing.
Find a battlefield
Ex illis uses a zone-based system for Movement. This makes for a gameplay that is both hassle-free and fast-flowing. The board is usually divided into a 5X4 grid, for a standard game with 3 or 4 Terrain Features. The exact dimensions of the zone is irrelevant; anything between 9” to 12” works fine.
You can use your usual wargaming table onto which you can place markers to define the limits of the zones. Alternatively, you can print and assemble the paper map we have made for you. The terrain features currently used in the game are:

Install the Rule Keeper software
To play Ex illis, you will need to install the Rule Keeper software either on a PC, a Mac or an iPod/iPhone. You can download the software directly from ex-illis.com. You need an Internet connection for this step. The downloading process can take some time depending on your connection speed.

With your army mustered, a battlefield found, and the Rule Keeper software installed, you are ready to play your first game! Login with your user name and account, select “Practice”, then “My First Game” and you’ll be ready to play. A quick note: when playing a “Practice” game, the second player is always called a Mirror. Make sure you pay attention to that detail when creating the terrain, selecting who uses what army, and deploying your units.
The rest of this document will walk you through your first battle. Don't worry if you do not understand everything at first: Ex illis is a game you can learn as you play. Once you have a good grasp of the basic concepts, you can browse through the rest of the encyclopedia and learn more about detailed mechanics and advanced strategies.

Improve your army
